When asked how he decided to become a sculptor,
Lothar describes his excitement after having visited
an exhibit of Ernst Barlach. He was so moved, that on his way home,
he pulled out a wooden road post
and immediately carved a very expressive figure.
So his first sculptural medium was wood.
There are a number of animals for godchildren-
elephants, sea lions, pelikans, nutcrackers, rocking horses.
Sometimes a felled tree was worked with ax and chainsaw.
Sometimes driftwood found on the beach after a Florida storm
was carved with an ax in Viking fashion,
the sharp edge used like a chisel.
Sometimes exotic woods were bought-
mahagony, purple heart, cocobolo, ebony.
His latest work is a return to wood- turning bowls.
